June 2024 Update

CEO Update

Just a week ago there was a seemingly never-ending
amount of sunshine. After so many months of dry
weather, how good is the rain as we step into the
Makuru (June-July) season?
It is great to see Perthites talking with ambition about
our city. Over the weekend Premier Cook reminded
us that Perth is the third ranking city in Australia in
The Oxford Economics and Global Cities Index, just
behind Melbourne and Sydney. This report highlights
Perth’s high GDP growth and excellent air quality as
key factors driving the city’s performance.

Thinking about celebration, I enjoyed our recent Urban Insights: Rottnest Beyond the Bay event. It provided members with a behind the scenes look into the developments unfolding at Wadjemup/ Rottnest Island.

Hosted by Rottnest Island Authority, the day included a Welcome to Country, Sand and Smoking Ceremony, and tour of Wadjemup Museum with Aboriginal Elder Terry Morich, as well as a bus trip out to West End and an informative Q&A with RIA Chair Hamish Beck. Reflecting on the event, one member summed it up perfectly as, “an excellent opportunity for learning, engaging, networking and reflection.” This was our first study tour, where do you think we should go next?

Our Urban Insights: ECU City on Stage conversation showed us what the future of Perth CBD will look like in February 2026. In 2023, the estimated resident population of Perth City was 32,000. With the ECU City
campus opening its doors to 10,000 students and staff in 2026, it will transform the dynamic of the city
entirely. Members witnessed the campus vertical design through a virtual fly-through, including the
intersection of arts, business and law faculties, and the opportunities they will provide for the broader
community.

As I mentioned in the attached video, we are in the final stages of the Perth and Peel Urban Greening
Strategy submission. I am energised by the passion and expertise each member has brought to the group. With discussions ranging from creating a green campaign, to exploring economic incentives, and
supercharging opportunities, I believe Committee for Perth’s submission will be unique in its liveability and future focused approach. We will share the document for members to review and endorse prior to our submission – so be warned!

A big thanks to those members who gave up their time to give their feedback on our Perth Perception
Survey 2024. This survey has been going since 2012, and we take great pride in its continuity. I look forward to sharing the results with you later in the year.

Don’t be a winter hermit, there is so much happening in Perth with Perth International Caberet Festival at His Majesty’s Theatre from 10 to 23 June, Maar Koodjal at Raine Square from 27 May to 14 July, World Oceans Day at Scitech this weekend (8 to 9 June) and the Other World’s exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Spaces Mandurah from 1 to 30 June. We love sharing ideas of what to do and see in the Perth region, so please keep sharing your ideas and activities with me. I hope you have had a fabulous long weekend, celebrating everything great about our region.

Until next time,
Paula Rogers

LIVE

BUILDING CITY PRIDE

WA Today has launched a series of hyper-local stories aimed at educating, inspiring and exploring Perth and WA stories. In one recent article, member Crown Perth CEO David Tsai shared his love for Perth as an ideal place to raise a family, indulge in a variety of Asian food, and revel in its consistent sunshine. I love the ambition and sense of pride instilled by this series. Look at those smiles – wonderful ambassadors for Perth!

VISIT

CITY OF LIGHT

Lightscape is returning again to Kings Park and Botanic Garden this June. It has a reimagined trail based on a new ‘roots’ theme, exploring what lies underneath the ground, as well as favourites from last year’s sold-out trail. With a special display of art, light and sound, discover Perth in a whole new light. A new glamping experience will be trialed for the duration of Lightscape 2024. With three tiny cabins available to book, this is the first time overnight accommodation has ever been available in Kings Park.

WORK

AUSPIRE NOMINATIONS OPEN

Nominations for the 2025 Australian of the Year Awards opened 1 June. These awards recognise and celebrate people who have made a significant contribution to the community and are changing lives and society for the better. If you know an inspirational leader or member of the community, please give them the recognition they deserve. Remember it only takes one nomination to elevate their voice and help them access more support. To access Auspire’s nomination resources, click here.

STUDY

NEXT GENERATION VENTURES

Curtin University has revealed its new $18.6m Curtin Venture Studio, which seeks to bridge the gap between research and building of ‘protoventures’. The initiative has been developed with support from the Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Trailblazer funded by the Department of Education’s Trailblazer Universities Program. It will enable access to capital, talent, market expertise, training and infrastructure in a future focused quest to support the resources sector productivity and critical minerals production. I am excited to see the impact of this program on our economy and future.

INVEST

SAFE STARTUP LANDING

Perth Landing Pad, which caters to international start ups as various points in their business life cycle, has
welcomed two MoUs with Indian MedTech startups. The program invites and supports startups and scaleups from Asia, and beyond, to set up and grow a Perth subsidiary, explore pathways into new markets and cultural immersion via online resources, business mentoring and networks. As part of this
exciting journey, Spacecubed is holding an event on June 13 titled Pitch Perth: A Perth Landing Pad
Showcase to allow attendees to gain insights on the topic “Why Perth”.
