June 2024 Update
CEO Update
Just a week ago there was a seemingly never-ending
amount of sunshine. After so many months of dry
weather, how good is the rain as we step into the
Makuru (June-July) season?
It is great to see Perthites talking with ambition about
our city. Over the weekend Premier Cook reminded
us that Perth is the third ranking city in Australia in
The Oxford Economics and Global Cities Index, just
behind Melbourne and Sydney. This report highlights
Perth’s high GDP growth and excellent air quality as
key factors driving the city’s performance.
Thinking about celebration, I enjoyed our recent Urban Insights: Rottnest Beyond the Bay event. It provided members with a behind the scenes look into the developments unfolding at Wadjemup/ Rottnest Island.
Hosted by Rottnest Island Authority, the day included a Welcome to Country, Sand and Smoking Ceremony, and tour of Wadjemup Museum with Aboriginal Elder Terry Morich, as well as a bus trip out to West End and an informative Q&A with RIA Chair Hamish Beck. Reflecting on the event, one member summed it up perfectly as, “an excellent opportunity for learning, engaging, networking and reflection.” This was our first study tour, where do you think we should go next?
Our Urban Insights: ECU City on Stage conversation showed us what the future of Perth CBD will look like in February 2026. In 2023, the estimated resident population of Perth City was 32,000. With the ECU City
campus opening its doors to 10,000 students and staff in 2026, it will transform the dynamic of the city
entirely. Members witnessed the campus vertical design through a virtual fly-through, including the
intersection of arts, business and law faculties, and the opportunities they will provide for the broader
community.
As I mentioned in the attached video, we are in the final stages of the Perth and Peel Urban Greening
Strategy submission. I am energised by the passion and expertise each member has brought to the group. With discussions ranging from creating a green campaign, to exploring economic incentives, and
supercharging opportunities, I believe Committee for Perth’s submission will be unique in its liveability and future focused approach. We will share the document for members to review and endorse prior to our submission – so be warned!
A big thanks to those members who gave up their time to give their feedback on our Perth Perception
Survey 2024. This survey has been going since 2012, and we take great pride in its continuity. I look forward to sharing the results with you later in the year.
Don’t be a winter hermit, there is so much happening in Perth with Perth International Caberet Festival at His Majesty’s Theatre from 10 to 23 June, Maar Koodjal at Raine Square from 27 May to 14 July, World Oceans Day at Scitech this weekend (8 to 9 June) and the Other World’s exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Spaces Mandurah from 1 to 30 June. We love sharing ideas of what to do and see in the Perth region, so please keep sharing your ideas and activities with me. I hope you have had a fabulous long weekend, celebrating everything great about our region.
Until next time,
Paula Rogers
