Committee for Perth’s Urban Insights: ECU City on Stage on May 23 will give you an inspiring and in-depth overview of the project and help you to learn about its transformational impact on the Perth CBD.
ECU Vice-President of Engagement, Sonia Mackay-Coghill, will lead a presentation on ECU City, which will be the new home of the renowned WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), School of Business and Law, School of Arts and Humanities’ creative programs, and much more.
It’s expected to bring 10,000 students and staff into the Perth CBD when it opens its doors in February 2026.

Sonia Mackay-Coghill
Sonia Mackay-Coghill joined Edith Cowan University (ECU) in 2016, and currently sits on the University’s Executive as Vice President (Engagement).
Sonia has provided leadership in the growth of ECU’s commercial programs and partnerships, external stakeholder engagement, and the University’s transformation agenda. With portfolio responsibility for Brand and Marketing, Business Growth and Development, Development and Alumni Relations, Strategic Relationships, and Engagement, she connects individuals and businesses with areas of excellence across ECU, and creates dynamic external opportunities through the development of enduring partnerships.
Sonia was instrumental in the University’s successful City Deals vision and proposal for Perth’s first comprehensive university campus in the heart of the CBD. As a result, ECU’s $853 million landmark city campus is due to open to students in semester one of 2026. Located in the heart of Perth, ECU City is the centrepiece of the Perth City Deal. It is set to transform the CBD and redefine higher education in Western Australia.
Sonia is a highly regarded strategic leader and brand specialist. She has held several executive leadership roles across multiple sectors, and possesses extensive experience in major projects and engagement. Sonia has served on the boards of Tourism Council WA; Telstra Rally Australia; Perth Fashion Festival, and more.
