Planting Perth for a Better Future

Join us to hear from Jon Hazelwood, Principal at Hassell in Sydney, at our Future Ready Forum: Planting Perth for a Better Future, on Wednesday, 11 September 2024. Jon, a global leader in public realm and landscape architecture, will lead the discussion on the transformative power of complex and diverse planting proposals, debunk greening myths and share insights on how cities around the world are taking significant steps to green their urban areas.

In February 2024, the WA State Government announced plans to develop a Perth and Peel Urban Greening Strategy, aimed at making the Perth region greener, cooler, and more liveable in the future. Committee for Perth formed a working group from our diverse membership base to develop a submission, contributing valuable insights to inform the Government’s strategy. Perth has the lowest tree canopy of any capital city in the world, and it’s shrinking.

This event will provide important ideas for the future of Perth. As part of this ongoing conversation, the Future Ready Forum: Planting Perth for a Better Future is designed to inform, inspire and share insights about greening opportunities in cities. We invite you to join us and share your knowledge to be part of the solution in Perth.

Jon Hazelwood

Based in Sydney, Jon is the global sector leader for Public Realm projects at Hassell. Over the past 20 years, Jon has guided projects from the broad, strategic thinking phase through to detailed resolution and successful delivery such as the recent design concept competition win for Ngurra: The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Precinct in Canberra, the transformation of the Melbourne Arts Precinct and a New Smart City in Oman. Over recent years Jon’s focus has been on the importance of Urban Biodiversity. Jon is leading important and industry changing research and demonstration projects that are exploring innovative ways our cities can be buzzing with both people and pollinators. Jon has also been instrumental in working alongside the Government Architect of NSW to develop ‘Biodiversity on Place’- a framework released in June 2024 to improve urban biodiversity. In 2023 Jon also collaborated with the Committee for Sydney to co-author ‘Nature Positive Sydney’. This study brought together smarts from across industry to map a pathway for action. In both studies an investment in place appropriate nature is clearly explained, tested and quantified.
