Mr Zempilas has been steadily building out his policy platform, recently announcing a series of initiatives including better access to healthcare, retail shopping hours reform, budget accountability and uranium mining development, with a focus on improving essential services, creating jobs, increasing transparency and building a stronger future for Western Australia.

As Leader of the Opposition since March 2025, Basil is a passionate advocate for Western Australia – driven by the belief that everyone, no matter where they live, deserves the opportunity to succeed.‍

He leads an energised team of Shadow Ministers and MPs focused on holding the Government to account and advancing our State in the best interests of all Western Australians.

Before entering State Parliament, Basil was Lord Mayor of the City of Perth and built a respected 30-year career as a prominent journalist and media commentator.
