Perth has finally cracked the Top 20 in Monocle’s Quality of Life Survey 2026, landing at 20th in the world (tied with Kyoto)

Monocle’s verdict on Perth points to what we already know: a laidback lifestyle built around the most sunshine hours of any Australian city, and a culture of work-life balance shaped by our beaches, riverfronts and bushland escarpments.

Monocle’s annual survey takes a different lens to data-heavy indices like the EIU, instead judging cities on lived experience: culture, retail, hospitality and architecture, with this year’s edition sharpening its focus on excitement, urban ambition and security.

It’s designed to inspire debate and discussion around what a liveable city means beyond policies, and towards conversations about what “moves our hearts, minds and feet”.

The article notes Perth has been “supercharged in recent years by multiple major infrastructure projects” — decades-long endeavours finally coming to fruition, including the ECU City Campus (our city’s “crown jewel”!), the Airport Line and Elizabeth Quay.

“These developments have made Perth a more attractive place to live, with residents enjoying the infrastructural benefits associated with global cities alongside the outdoor pursuits that have always made it special”, says Monocle.

We’re feeling proud as punch. The outlook is sunny indeed! Read the full survey here.
